There are a very large number of wikis available for use in a corporate environment. The differences between wikis can be very difficult to determine and because the wiki market is developing so rapidly, the differences are changing over time.

The viral spread model, which is responsible for so many wiki implementations means that often there are many wikis running in a company at one time.

Most wikis will have the fundamental features, such as page history, recent changes etc.

For a corporate wiki, the features to look for are:

  • Search - attachment contents is very important
  • LDAP integration
  • Database compatibility
  • Personal space features
  • RSS
  • Fine grained permission control
  • The ability to create

Another consideration is local technical support. What happens if your wiki, which has quietly grown to take on some mission critical data, suddenly stops dead? If you are in a 'high tech' area, there may be many support options, but if you are somewhere remote, then this is more of an issue.

A wiki that is for internet usage will have different requirements to a corporate wiki. License cost per seat and scalability will become significant issues if a very large audience is expected.
